Why It Matters

This early Haunt of Fear issue combines Craig’s striking corpse-and-graveyard cover with four horror stories featuring EC’s Old Witch, Crypt-Keeper and Vault-Keeper. Its appeal lies in the cover, the original pre-Code printing and the breadth of EC artists represented inside.

  • star A Biting Finish! — art by Graham Ingels; a murderer’s attempt to escape leads to a gruesome reckoning.
  • star Horror in the Freak Tent! — art by Wally Wood; a cruel circus proprietor faces the consequences of mistreating his performers.
  • star A Tasty Morsel! — art by Jack Davis; a traveller finds ominous hospitality at an isolated inn.
  • star Seeds of Death! — art by Johnny Craig; a concealed murder leaves an unexpected trail.

Creators

Johnny Craig provides the cover and interior artwork, alongside Graham Ingels, Wally Wood and Jack Davis. The issue is edited by Al Feldstein. Indexed writing credits include Al Feldstein, Bill Gaines and Johnny Craig; colour work is attributed to Marie Severin. Creator credits were checked against GoCollect’s issue record, with the story line-up cross-checked against the series issue index.

Collector Notes

This is an original 1951 EC printing, not a later reprint. The photographed indicia identifies issue #5 and Fables Publishing Co., Inc. The early ACMP seal is distinct from the later Comics Code Authority seal; this remains a pre-Code issue.

The actual copy shows paper loss at the upper-right front cover, spine and edge wear, creasing and small tears. Further wear and small losses are visible on the back cover and photographed interior edges. Please examine all five photographs, including the back cover, indicia and interior spreads.

This comic is raw and ungraded. The supplied 1.8 GD- grade is a visual estimate only. Grading is subjective and no professional or CGC grade is guaranteed. All photographs show the actual copy and form part of the description.
