A major early Shang-Chi Bronze Age key, Special Marvel Edition #16 from February 1974 features the second appearance of Shang-Chi and the first appearance and origin of Midnight (M’Nai).

This is the final issue of Special Marvel Edition before the feature continues as Master of Kung Fu #17. The cover is by Jim Starlin, with the story “Midnight Brings Dark Death!” written by Steve Englehart with Starlin co-plotting.

Why It Matters

Special Marvel Edition #16 is only Shang-Chi’s second comic-book appearance and introduces Midnight, one of the defining early characters from the Master of Kung Fu mythos. It also closes the Special Marvel Edition title before Shang-Chi takes over the numbering under Master of Kung Fu.
